A City Teeming With Nature

Kyoto developed in a way that keeps it in harmony with the natural surroundings. Everything from the city’s art and cuisine to World Heritage Sites take inspiration from its environment and the changing seasons. You can go straight into the heart of nature yourself with outdoor activities that are easy to integrate into your trip.

Running

One of the simplest ways to appreciate the fresh air and natural scenery in Kyoto is to go for a run. Each route highlights different iconic spots, such as along the Kamogawa River and around Nijo-jo Castle.

Kyoto Marathon (February)

This is a large-scale citizen participation type marathon held in Kyoto City. Providing a beautiful natural setting, the course takes runners on a memorable journey through seven World Heritage sites to Kyoto’s most famous landmarks. University students in Kyoto also take part in the marathon as volunteers or “Endo-moriagetai (music and dance performers along the streets)” to bring a lot of excitement to this event. While focusing on more eco-friendly activities, they strive to create an environmentally friendly competition as well.

Cycling

The scenery of Kyoto includes everything from mountains and rivers to historic shrines and temples to quaint neighborhoods. A cycling course is one of the best ways to appreciate this variety with both depth and breadth.
