The owners of Kaikado café, Kaikado, is Japan’s oldest store selling Japanese tea caddies, the containers which store tea leaves. The company opened Kaikado Cafe so more people could get the opportunity to use traditional crafts which are the pride of Kyoto.
Kaikado cafe serves tea, coffee, and even cheese cakes on handmade dishware which was produced in collaboration with well-known traditional Kyoto craftsmen. When you order iced coffee, Kaikado will serve your it in a glass made especially for the cafe in the image of a tea caddy.
On top of that, the wooden boards used to serve cheese cakes are an original design from the famous Japanese wooden bucket maker Nakagawa-mokkougei. Lovers of traditional crafts will go crazy for cafe.
The cafe’s commitment to details also extends to the menu, which has been created in collaboration with popular businesses not only in Kyoto, but also in Tokyo and London. For example, Kaikado’s teas are made using tea leaves sourced from Postcard Teas, a tea specialist in London. It’s so worth having one of their teas, as Kaikado has managed to keep the taste eerily similar to that of the tea as the shop in London. Another great part of this cafe is that the tea caddies that Kaikado is known for and the plates and glasses used in the cafe are all for sale. With a relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to enjoy works by skilled craftsmen, Kaikado cafe can be considered one of Kyoto’s tourist spots.

The London tea specialist Postcard Teas provideds four types of teas at Kaikado Cafe: the classic and very palatable English Breakfast Tea, Earl Gray with Lemon Oil, which features a refreshing aftertaste, and Supernatural (Japanese Green & Black Tea), a blend of English black tea and Japanese green tea leaves. After a sip you’ll notice the faint fragrance of Japanese tea. The cafe’s teas are made according to recipes direct from the owner(s) of Postcard Teas and will make you feel just like you’re in the UK.
Kaikado tea caddies come in tin, brass, and copper. Produced collaboration with London tea specialist Postcard Teas, these caddies are engraved with Postcard Teas’ cute logo. Remove the caddy lid and the teapot logo will look its lid’s been removed.
Because these caddies seal tightly, they can also be used as containers for storing pasta or sweets–not just tea leaves.

Just be careful to avoid washing your caddy in water.
