Japanese poetry has celebrated and taken inspiration from the Saga-Arashiyama area of Kyoto since ancient times. The Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts & Culture is dedicated to protecting the heritage of this artform by showcasing the history and beauty of “Hyakunin Isshu” – an anthology of classical Japanese waka poetry, said to have originated in this area.
The second floor of this museum has been designed to closely resemble a Japanese painting by featuring a large 120-tatami mat gallery and incorporating the view of the Oi River as its background.
Exciting special exhibitions are held annually, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of Japan year-round through both the works on display as well as the surrounding nature.
The museum’s cafe, “Arashiyama OMOKAGE Terrace,” overlooks a beautiful rock garden. You can relax there even without visiting the museum. Its terrace seating is pet-friendly.
