There are many historical temples in the Kiyomizu area, including the World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera
Temple and nearby Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji Temple). Traditional crafts such as a Kiyomizu-yaki, one type of Kyo-yaki pottery, were also developed here, so the streets and alleys between the temples are filled with souvenir shops for ceramics and other items. The Gion area developed as a town near the gate of Yasaka-jinja Shrine and is a popular entertainment district where geiko and maiko live. You can take a stroll through streets that are lined with elegant tea houses, Japanese restaurants, and foreign eateries, as well as bars, cafes, and general stores.

Note
The Gion area is one of Kyoto’s most popular destinations. It is well known as an area where you can encounter maiko, but taking pictures of maiko without permission is strictly prohibited. Hanami-koji Street has a lot of traffic, so please avoid walking in the middle of the road.
