This area is located northeast from the downtown of Kyoto. And it is at the base of Mt. Nyoigatake where a famous Mountain Bon Fire event is held in the summer.
It is known as core cultural district of Kyoto because it has not only beautiful temples and shrines but also a zoo, museums, and theaters. The district is also near Kyoto University producing a great number of Nobel-Prize winners.

Sights
●The Philosopher's Path
A 1.8 km-long promenade along the Lake Biwa canal which is connected to the largest lake in Japan. The promenade's name is said to come from the philosopher Kitaro Nishida who taught at Kyoto University. He had strolled and meditated here daily.
●Heian Jingu Shrine
In 1895, Heian Jingu Shrine was built for the 1100th years anniversary of relocating the capital to Kyoto from Nara. The entrance to the shrine boasts one of the biggest torii gate in Japan. It is the landmark of this district. Its garden was designed by famous garden designer, Jihei Ogawa and can be enjoyed in all seasons with different blooming flowers.

●Nanzenji Temple
As a Zen temple, Nanzenji is ranked above the five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto. Nanzenji's sanmon gate is well known as the famous scene in Japanese traditional performance, Kabuki tale featuring legendary Japanese outlaw hero, Goemon. An aqueduct bridge of the Lake Biwa Canal called Suirokaku can be found on the temple grounds. Its distinctive arched pillars are made of bricks and granite.

●Jidai Matsuri Festival
One of the tree major festivals in Kyoto. Participants of the festival are dressed up in traditional costume and parade from Imperial Garden to Heian Jingu Shrine on every 22nd of October. Their costumes and items are replicad based on academic analysis of historical findings. The parade usually arrives at Heian Jingu Shrine around 2:30 PM. Reserved viewing seats are available at 3 spots in the city.

Take a stroll and a memorable photo by combining the Heritage of Industrial Modernization (Suirokaku) and historical temple landscape at Nanzenji temple.
In Spring, Try Okazaki Jikkokubune Boat Riding. It takes approximately 25 mins for a round 3km cruise trip. Reservation is recommended. On the night cruise, you can see an atmospheric scenery with illumination of cherry blossoms.
