Jingo-ji Temple, a famous temple of the Shingon School, was founded in 781. Visitors to the temple can throw clay kawarake discs into the valley that lies below in order to dispel bad karma. Numerous statues, paintings, and writings from the Heian and Kamakura Periods are housed here. It is also a popular spot for viewing the beautiful autumn foliage. For a period of 14 years from 809, the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan, Kobo Daishi, was the abbot of this temple. Over time the temple became dilapidated with age but was rebuilt in Heian Period by the priest Bunkaku.
