Teradaya Inn is well-known as a site of two politically significant clashes between samurai right at the end of the Edo period (1603 – 1868).
These occurences, called the Teradaya Incident are separated into two events. The first one took place in 1862 where an assassination plot against an imperial regent and the shogun’s representative in Kyoto was stopped by the feudal retainers of the Satsuma Domain. 9 people, including the mastermind, have died as a result of the fight. Another Teradaya Incident took place in 1866, where Sakamoto Ryoma (1836 – 1867), a famous samurai and influential figure in the modernization of Japan, has managed to escape an assassination attempt on his life with the help of his future wife, Ryo.
Teradaya Inn was burned down during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi (1868). It was later rebuilt, and today it displays various items associated with Ryoma and the end of the Edo period.
