The Keihoku area is located in the northern part of Kyoto City and is rich in nature. The area had been the property of the imperial family from ancient times. Its trees supplied wood to the city center via rafts transported down the Hozugawa River. The lumber was used to build Heian-kyo (the ancient capital of Kyoto) and to rebuild the Kyoto Imperial Palace after it was destroyed by fire.
