Daigo-ji Sanbo-in Temple was founded as a sub-temple of Daigo-ji Temple in 1115, but received a total revamp in 1598 under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the feudal leader who unified Japan. It is a fine example of the amazing opulence of that period. The Kano paintings and the garden of this temple are its especially attractive features.

 

The garden is filled with about 800 stones - the Japanese affection for beautifully arranged stones goes back many years. The most famous stone here is the huge rectangular "Fujito-no-ishi". It is linked to deception and death. A fabulous price was once turned down for it and it is even the subject of a Noh play.
