Keihoku area is located in the northern part of Kyoto city and has rich nature. The area had been imperial properties from the ancient times and its wood was supplied to the central part of the city carried on rafts down the Hozugawa River and used as construction materials to build the Heiankyou (the ancient capital of Kyoto) and to rebuild the Kyoto Imperial Palace after it was destroyed by fire.
Joshoko-ji Temple was built in the 14th century and is a Zen Buddhist temple belonging to the Tenryuji School of the Rinzai Sect. It has a connection to the Imperial family because its founder was Kogon, the retired emperor who became a Buddhist monk. The temple is famous for its Kokonoe-zakura (cherry tree with ninefold cherry flowered) (natural treasure) which is said to have been planted by the Cloistered Emperor Kogon and Sakon no Sakura (the Cherry Tree on the left) donated from Kyoto Imperial Palace.

Suginosei is the studio to refine 100% natural aroma oil from Kitayama sugi (Kitayama cedar trees) and Kuromoji (spicebush) grown in Keihoku and Yuzu (citron) grown in Mizuo. There is a tour to see how to cut down a cedar tree and extract essential oil and also experience it.

This is the biggest festival in Keihoku area held in the first half of November every year.
