What is the Jidai Matsuri Festival?

One of Kyoto’s three greatest festivals, the Jidai Matsuri has been held since 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Heian-kyo’s (old name for Kyoto) founding. This spectacular procession features 2,000 participants in authentic historical costumes representing different periods of Japanese history, starting from Meiji period (1868 – 1912) and finishing at the Enryaku period (782 – 806). Horsen, oxen, and elaborate ceremonial items will also make an appearance during the procession.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity of seeing this striking procession if you are in Kyoto this autumn!
