A traditional Japanese dance performance called “Gion Odori” is held annually from November 1 to 10 at Gion Kaikan Theater.
It features original scripts that incorporate songs and dances performed by the maiko and geiko of Gion Higashi, one of the five kagai—traditional entertainment districts of Kyoto. As the only main dance performance held by a maiko and geiko district in autumn, it attracts many visitors from both Japan and abroad.
Though not comprehensive dance performances, the other four kagai hold special review sessions and skill showcases for their maiko and geiko around the same time. They are available to the general public and are enjoyed as beautiful performances in their own right.
