The Lake Biwa Canal is a canal opened in the Meiji era of the 19th century for the purpose of securing and transporting water in Kyoto and generating hydroelectric power.

 

This long canal, which runs from Keage in Higashiyama, an area full of greenery in Kyoto, over the mountains to Lake Biwa in the east, is also known as a beautiful historical heritage site that shows the elaborate Japanese architectural techniques of the Meiji-era.

For a limited time, pleasure boat-cruises operated on this Lake Biwa Canal, and you can experience boating for about an hour.
