Basic knowledge and manners of public transportation in Japan
We have compiled a list of things you should know in advance when using public transportation in Japan, including "Types of railways in Japan" and "How to use and charge your transportation system IC card".
Types of Japanese trains
Shinkansen bullet train:
This is a high-speed railway that connects major cities. Access to Kyoto is mainly by Tokaido Shinkansen (Nozomi). However, please note that you cannot ride the Nozomi with JAPAN RAIL PASS. Some of the cars are Green Cars, which offer different interior facilities and comfort.
Conventional line
The networks often used for sightseeing in Kyoto as networks with other major cities and areas include JR Railway, Hankyu Railway, Keihan Railway, and Kintetsu Railway. There are different types of trains such as Limited Express, Express, Rapid, and Local trains. Some trains may not stop at certain stations, so pay attention to the train type before boarding to see if it stops at your destination.
Subway
Two lines operate in Kyoto: the Karasuma Line and the Tozai Line. The subways are highly punctual, so use the subways until you are near your destination.
Types of IC cards
Nationwide interoperable transportation system IC cards are available at major railroad and bus operators. The most common ones in the Kansai region are "ICOCA".
They can also be used on JR lines, private railways, buses, and some cabs.
■How to use
Contactless payment:Simply hold the card over the reader to make a payment. By holding the card over the ticket gate at the station or on the bus, you can get on and off the train or bus smoothly.
They can also be used at some convenience stores, restaurants, and vending machines. ICOCA also includes "ICOCA for Apple Pay" and "Mobile ICOCA for Android," which can be used with smartphones and other mobile devices.
There is also the KANSAI ONE PASS for foreign visitors to Japan.

As of spring 2024, Nankai Railway is the only railroad company in the Kansai region that accepts credit card payment by touch at ticket gates. (Some other companies are scheduled to introduce it in 2024.)
