The area is located northeast from the downtown of Kyoto. And it is at the base of Mt. Nyoigatake where is famous for Mountain Bon Fire event in summer.
This area is known as core cultural district of Kyoto because there are not only attractive temples and shrines but also a zoo, museums, and theaters. The district is also near Kyoto University producing a great number of Nobel-Prize winners.

●The Philosopher's Path
 It’s 1.8Km promenade along the Lake Biwa canal which was leaded from the largest lake in Japan. The promenade name is supposed from the philosopher Kitaro Nishida teaching at Kyoto University. He had strolled and meditate daily at this promenade.

 
●Heian Jingu Shrine
In 1895, Heian Jingu Shrine had built for 1100th years anniversary of relocating the capital to Kyoto from Nara. On the approach to the shrine, it has one of the biggest torii gate in Japan. It is the landmark of this district. You can enjoy its’ garden designed by famous garden designer, Jihei Ogawa in all seasons with different blooms.

●Nanzenji Temple
 As a Zen temple, Nanzenji is ranked above the five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto. Nanzenji's sanmon gate is well known as the famous scene in Japanese traditional performance, Kabuki tale featuring legendary Japanese outlaw hero, Goemon. In the property, an aqueduct bridge of the Lake Biwa Canal called Suirokaku is crossing. Its’ arched brick pillars are made of bricks and granite and distinctive.

●Jidai Matsuri Festival
One of the tree major festivals in Kyoto. Citizen of Kyoto are dressed up in traditional costume and parade from Imperial Garden to Heian Jingu Shrine on every 22ed October. Their costumes and items are the real replica based on academic analyses. The arrival time at Heian Jingu Shrine would be around 2:30 PM. Reserving seats are available at 3 points in the city.

In Spring, Try Okazaki Jikkokubune Boat Riding. It’s approximately 25 mins cruise for 3Km round trip. Reservation is recommended. On the night cruise, you will see romantic scenery with illumination of cherry blossoms.
