The northwestern area of Kyoto has a calm atmosphere compared to the busy areas of Kyoto. Not only the famous Golden pavilion, Kinkakuji, you can also feel the old traditional side of Kyoto in this area. Such as the Kamishichiken area, one of the geisha district in Kyoto, and Nishijin area, famous for Kyoto’s traditional Nishijinori textile used for kimonos.

●Kamishichiken
One of the most famous buildings in Kyoto is the Kinkakuji temple, which is one of the UNESCO World Heritages in Kyoto. The highlight of the temple is the Golden Pavilion (Shariden), which was built in the late 14th century by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the most powerful shogun in power at the time.
It shows different appearances depending on the season and weather, and many tourists are especially attracted by the contrast between the white snow on the roof and the golden color, which can be seen on a snowy winter day.
●Kitano-Tenmangu Shrine
Kitano-tenmangu shrine is the main shrine of all the tenmangu shrines in Japan, which is more than 120,000. Tenmangu shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who represented the middle Heian period. Since Michizane is known for being the “god of academics”, many students also visit Kitano-tenmangu shrine to pray for their study.

●Kamishichiken
Kamishichiken is located just east of the Kitano-tenmangu shrine. It is the oldest maiko / geiko (geisha) district in Kyoto. Unlike the other remaining districts, which are located close to the city center, Kamishichiken is further away with fewer tourists. The nostalgic atmosphere with the lanterns lit up after the sunset is a must see scenery.
