Saryo-Hosen is a well-known Japanese confectioner (Wagashi) in Kyoto.
Although they are located in a residential area and there are no train stations nearby, the store still receives many customers who come to enjoy their Japanese sweets in the traditional Kyoto-style Kyo-Machiya townhouse. All tables look out upon a Japanese garden and there is no background music in the restaurant, which creates a nice, homely ambiance. All of the sweets are made by very charming expert Japanese confectioners and are as delicate as jewels. The Warabimochi (Jelly-like bracken-dumpling) is an absolutely must try! This sweet is made with extremely rare Bracken starch flour and has an absolutely irresistible smooth, jelly-like texture!
Seasonal Japanese sweets of the day served with Matcha green tea are also available. As they change seasonally, you do not choose the six select sweets from the menu, but rather choose from the ones presented to you at the time of ordering.
All seats are on traditional Tatami mats, so you can enjoy wonderfully Japanese-styled seating while basking in the surroundings of the beautiful Japanese garden.

Warabimochi / ¥1,300

This unique Warabimochi can only be enjoyed at Saryo Housen and looks almost too brilliant to eat.
Try pouring over the thick brown sugar syrup and enjoying the further intensified rich and refined flavors of this rare dessert.
The expert confectioners begin making the warabimochi as soon as you order it, which gives it an extremely smooth and gooey texture that is entirely unique to freshly made warabimochi. While you wait for your warabimochi to be done, why not relax and enjoy the garden view from your table.

Seasonal Japanese Sweets with Matcha / ¥1100

Six kinds of seasonal sweets that change to express the different characteristics of each of the four seasons. The natural sweetness of the different sweets create the perfect contrast with the slightly bitter Matcha green tea.
In addition to Matcha, there are other green teas available as well.
However, note that prices change depending on the drink.

Souvenirs / ¥170-

There are numerous souvenirs displayed at the entrance of the store. Saryo Housen sell Japanese sweets individually as well as in packs.
Each of the souvenirs are worth getting in their own right, so why not pick up one for yourself or a loved one!
Note: If you are interested in getting something as a souvenir to take home, please make sure to check the best before date.

How to Order

The six traditional Japanese sweets are not listed on the menu and are instead presented to you at the time of ordering.

Feel free to spend the time to carefully select your desired sweet.
