Kyoto City Subway
The Kyoto City Subway is composed of 2 lines (the Karasuma Line running north-south, and the Tozai Line running east-west.)
- Karasuma Line:This line runs north-south through central Kyoto. It passes through Kyoto Station, the Kitaoji Bus Terminal, and other transfer points for trains and buses.
- Tozai Line: Tozai Line: This line runs east-west through central Kyoto. It is convenient for going to Nijo-jo Castle and Heian-jingu Shrine. It is possible to transfer to the Karasuma Line at Karasuma-Oike Station.
There are transfers available to JR and 4 privately-operated railways:
- JR(Japan Railway): Transfer at Kyoto Station, Nijo Station, Yamashina Station, and Rokujizo Station.
- Keihan Railway: Transfer at Sanjo Keihan Station
- Kintetsu Railway: Transfer at Kyoto Station and Takeda Station.
- Hankyu Railway: Transfer at Shijo Station.
- Randen (Keifuku Electric Railroad): Transfer at Uzumasa Tenjingawa Station.

Tickets＆Fares
- The fare for a ride is determined based on the section of the line traveled, ranging from 220 JPY on the low end to 360 JPY on the high end for adults. See details here.
- Half price for children.
- Credit cards cannot be used at ticket machines.
- IC cards that can be used nationwide and the Kansai Area Pass can be used on the Kyoto Subway.
