A Temple with Strong Connections with the Imperial Household Enshrining The “Running” God of Wealth
Sennyu-ji Temple’s Unryu-in, was an independent head temple of the Shingon Sect’s Sennyuji School of Buddhism founded in 1372, at the request of Emperor Gokogen. This temple has strong ties with the Imperial Family and on its grounds stands the Reimei-den Hall, which houses mortuary tablets of members of the imperial household, and the Main Hall, called “Ryugeden,” which is famous for the practice of transcribing sutras, as it is where tools used to transcribe sutras donated by Emperor Gomizuno’o are stored (reign: 1611-1629). The Main Hall, will be open specially so visitors can see an intense painting of a pair of dragons along with “Fujin” and “Raijin,” the gods of wind and thunder respectively. This painting was produced by Dono Musui a famous ink painter. Other highlights include the Shoin, where you will find the round “window to enlightenment,” the square “window of illusionment,” and a rare image of the god of wealth, Daikokuten, depicted running in a pair of straw sandals. Special treasures are also on display, including the “nine-stars” (Kuyosei) that make up the principle image of the temple and a portrait of Emperor Go-komatsu.
