”Mitera,” The Imperial Family’s Cemetery
Sennyu-ji Temple, the Imperial Family’s Cemetery, also known as “Mitera,” is the head temple of the Shingon Sect’s Sennyuji School of Buddhism. Magnificent halls such as the Buddha Hall (Important Cultural Property), and the “Yokihi Kannon” (Important Cultural Property) enshrined in the Kannon Hall are also known for their beauty. The specially opened Reimei-den is a Shinden-style building that was reconstructed in 1884, during the Meiji Era. Inside you will find the mortuary tablets of generations of past emperors. The Imperial Chamber, which was relocated from the Imperial Palace, is still used by the royal family as a place to rest. This facility is divided into six rooms including “the Imperial Family Room,” “the Court Lady Room,” and the “the Throne Room,” the last of which has walls decorated with a wall painting called “Kinkacho,” produced by imperial court painters of the Tosa School, during the Edo Period (1600 - 1868). Other highlights include the Kaie-do Hall, which houses the thirty images of the Buddha belonging to the imperial family, as well as a Chisen-style garden, known for the pond that sits at its center.
