Remains of the Ruler’s Utopia, The Cream of Momoyama Culture
Kodai-ji Temple was erected by Kitanomandokoro Nene to honor her husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi after his passing. There are many pieces of architecture and temple treasures that convey the opulent Momoyama culture, found in the garden (Historic Landmark and Designated Place of Scenic Beauty) designed by Kobori Enshu, and the tea houses, Karakasa-tei and Shigure-tei (both Important Cultural Properties) which were relocated from Fushimi Castle. During this special opening, you will have an opportunity to enter the outer sanctum of Nene's grave "Otamaya," (Important Cultural Property), and get a closer view of the “Kodai-ji Temple Makie” of the dais, alter, and entire inner sanctum of the temple.
In the Abbot’s Chamber, you will find a display of a bird and animal-patterned battle surcoat and a padded silk garment worn by Nene, which were made from a repurposed Persian carpet given to Hideyoshi as a gift from Portugal (both reproductions). At the Sho Museum, there are such objects on display as “Uchishiki,” a quilted silk garment which has been repurposed into Buddhist ritual implements, as well as Hideyoshi's beloved “Tang Cane.”
