The ancient shrine at which this festival is held, Oharano-jinja, is the first subsidiary shrine to Nara's great Kasuga-taisha Shrine. The Mitakari-sai Festival has a history of over 300 years, and its special "Kamizumo" sumo wrestling rituals, which are held to offer thanks for a bountiful harvest, are registered as an Intangible Cultural Property by the City of Kyoto. Following rituals in the shrine's main hall, the "Kamizumo" rituals will be held in the dirt grounds within the shrine, as well as a sumo competition amongst local elementary school-age and very young children.
