To-ji Temple is famous for the market it holds on the 21st of each month on the anniversary of the death of the famous Buddhist monk Kukai. During this first market, or "Hatsu Kobo" of the new year, the temple grounds will be lively with more people than its usual markets, and filled with 1,200 stalls selling antiques, local goods, potted plants and other garden items, pottery, and much more.
