Autumn Doll Exhibition at Hokyo-ji Temple

An Imperial Monzeki Temple Connected to Princess Kazunomiya: Autumn Foliage at the Doll Temple

Known as "Dodo Gosho" ("the Imperial Palace of Many Generations"), this monzeki temple (led by members of the imperial family) is home to many beautiful dolls sent from the imperial court, giving it the nickname, "the Doll Temple." In the Main Hall, decorated with "Autumn Grasses," said to be painted by the famous artist Kano Tanyu, and bright sliding door panels painted by the Japanese painter Kawamata Yukikazu; an elevated room usually closed off to the public will be open during this event. There is an extraodinary view of the autumn leaves in the garden in front of the Main Hall, lovely with its famous, beautifully-shaped maple tree and and stretch of moss, as well as in the "Crane and Tortoise Garden," where the Princess Kazu, betrothed to the 14th shogun, Tokugawa Iemochi, once played as a child.
