Wachu-an: Special Autumn Opening at Notre Dame Jogakuin Junior & Senior High School

A Beautiful Mix of Western & Japanese Styles: See this Elegant Merchant Home Adorned with Autumn Foliage

Wachu-an is a well-known building constructed in the early days of the Showa Period (1926-1989) as the residence of Fujii Hikoshiro, a merchant from Omi (modern-day Shiga Prefecture). It was acquired by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1949, and currently stands on the campus of Notre Dame Jogakuin Junior and Senior High School, and was just recently renovated in 2015. A small stream runs through the expansive gardens, and, making use of the sloping land of the lush surrounding foothills, an interior reception room and Western-style building are built in a row, connected by a passage. The two-story Western-style building is built with Spanish influences, including a beautiful hall furnished with parquetry flooring, ceiling ornamentation, and a fireplace. In the reception room, made from quality pine timber in a traditional Japanese style, there are elements of sukiya-zukuri architecture in the transom, floor, and ceiling. Hikoshiro himself was involved in the construction planning, and during this special opening, visitors will be able to see the excellent results of that construction, as well as the autumn leaves in the garden out the window.
