It has become custom to open the Heian-jingu Shrine gardens for free once every year to commemorate the anniversary of their establishment.
In autumn, seven well-known autumnal flowers can be seen during their peak bloom here, including Japanese bush clover and the flowering herb “fuji bakama.”
The eastern, central, and western gardens within the shrine grounds were created by Ogawa Jihei VII, a legendary figure in the world of modern garden architecture. Visitors can enjoy the garden's incorporation of Higashiyama as a backdrop, creating a very natural-looking garden, with its use of the familiar local landscape.
