Like the Toribeno area in Higashiyama, the Adashino area in Saga-Arashiyama was historically used as an unofficial funeral ground. A great many stone statues and small stone pagodas have been excavated from within the grounds of Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, and are now gathered together in one location as a memorial to pray for the souls of the dead left there long ago. During this event, visitors will light votive candles dedicated to the nearly 8,000 stone statues and tiny pagodas, making for a very mystical scene. This is one of the Sagano area’s representative summer rituals.
