Every year around the Day of the Ox in midsummer, visitors holding votive lights will immerse their legs up to the knee in Mitarashi Pond, within the Shimogamo-jinja Shrine grounds, and pray for their health and well-being. This ritual is also sometimes popularly known as the "Footbath Ritual." Placing your bare feet into water is cooling and refreshing, even in midsummer.
