Hyakumanben-san’s monthly flea market for handmade goods

October 07 , 2015

Located a short walk from Demachiyanagi station, just opposite Kyoto University, lies Chionji Temple, better known as Hyakumanben-san. On the 15th of every month, the grounds of this temple are filled with little booths set up by vendors waiting to sell their goods. What makes this flea market special is that all of the items sold have to be handmade. “I made this. Please buy it.” is the motto with which this flea market was started in 1987 after which it gained more and more popularity. The goods on sale range from clothes, ceramics, purses and woodwork to souvenirs, accessories, food and drink.
This is the perfect place to buy a special souvenir, something unique and Japanese, made in Kyoto, and enjoy some drink and food.
The flea market is held every month on the 15th, even in the rain, from 8 am to 4 pm.
