Memorial Service with Thousand Lanterns at Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple
Kyoto's Takigi Noh theatre performances are one of the city's most popular events which is held in early summer. This performance was started in 1950 as a joint program of Kyoto City and Kyoto Nohgaku Association. In the early evening when the torch is started to lit, the vermillion lacquered Heian shrine pavilions will also lit-up, and the Noh stage will appear out of the gloom. This is a truly fantastic moment. On both days, three major Noh schools (Kanze, Kongo and Okura) will perform these slow-moving, mysterious plays on a special fire-lit, outdoor stage set up in Heian Shrine.
